Our Story:
LumiGrow co-founders Kevin Wells and Vince Bafetti drew on more than 20 years of combined experience developing innovative technologies for leading organizations including Amazon, Dolby, Logitech and NASA. Both Kevin and Vince brought a history of interest in LED lighting to the table when they co-founded LumiGrow.
When Vince was just 9 years old, he created an illuminated robot Halloween costume from LEDs he received from an engineer and family friend. Vince watched with interest as LEDs got brighter throughout the 1980’s and different colors of LEDs emerged from the lab and made it into the marketplace through the late 1990’s. In 2003, he bought a copy of the first LED textbook and read about NASA researchers growing plants with blue and red LEDs.
A longtime enthusiast of alternative energy solutions, Kevin recognized the potential of efficient LED lighting for the horticultural industry, which relied on wasteful technology never intended for plants. Kevin began researching the possibility in earnest to determine the precise lighting requirements of plants.
In November 2006, Kevin contacted Vince to discuss his new project. They were surprised and pleased to discover that had both been envisioning the same idea. They immediately began to design and engineer state of the art circuit boards, enclosures, heat sinks, integrated fans and light colors. Prototypes were tested by greenhouse curators at Duke University and UC Davis among many other pioneers.
The first LumiGrow LED lighting solution, launched in 2008, received an enthusiastic reception from commercial growers looking for more cost-efficient means of boosting crop yield. Since then, Kevin and Vince have significantly expanded their operations. Every member of the LumiGrow team is committed to enabling the indoor agricultural industry to achieve energy efficiency without compromise.
A year later, we introduced the LumiGrow ES solution, which features an enhanced spectrum for optimal plant growth. We’re proud to offer what is quite simply the most powerful and energy-efficient LED light for horticultural applications.
